Award Show Hairstyles: For Kids!

The month of January was riddled with award shows. From the People’s Choice Awards to the Grammy’s just last week, Hollywood’s starlets stepped onto the red carpets in their bold trend-setting styles. But it seems that keeping up with Hollywood style trends is no longer just a grown up thing to do. “Kids nowadays are so style conscious. In fact, kids (and parents) come into my salons everyday with pages torn out of celebrity magazines, asking for styles that celebrities are sporting,” says Cozy Friedman, founder of So Cozy products and Cozy’s Cuts for Kids.

Below we award an A-lister from each of the shows for having the best hair style, and Cozy offers easy tips on how to help your child achieve a similar look at home.

People’s Choice Awards: Heidi Klum

We know that braids have always been a go-to style for little girls but this style has now become all the rage among adults and celebs too. With Heidi Klum’s take on a sleek, high ponytail braid at The People’s Choice Awards on January 8th, we don’t think the style is going anywhere soon.

Cozy’s Tip:

I love this style because there is no better way to dress up a regular ponytail for your little one than to add a braid! It’s actually easier than it looks. Pull her hair back in a high ponytail like you normally would, except take a small section of hair from the bottom and braid it, and then wrap it around the elastic and secure with bobby pins and hairspray. Then with the remaining hair in the ponytail, braid as you normally would! Screen Actors Guild Awards (SAG): Kerry Washington

The award to best hairstyle of the SAGs goes to: Scandal’s Kerry Washington. Kerry teamed her hot pink crop top and skirt ensemble with a beehive chignon complete with ribbon hair accessory.

Cozy’s Tip:

I love this graceful look and I actually have a similar version that girls can recreate in my book, Cozy’s Complete Guide to Girl’s called The Ballerina Chignon. The trick to this hairstyle is to pull back the hair into a ponytail and split the ponytail in half horizontally. Then you comb the top section up and roll it into a loop, pinning the ends to the base of the ponytail. Do the same for the lower section of the ponytail except roll this section of hair down. Using several hairpins, stretch out he loops of hair all around the ponytail base so the loops each form a semicircle—one on top and one on bottom. Girls can have fun with this style by adding fun accessories—embellished bobby pins or a headband as Kerry did.

Grammy’s: Beyonce

There’s no argument that Beyonce stole the show at the Grammy Awards on Sunday January 26th when after her jaw-dropping performance with husband Jay Z, she changed into an equally jaw-dropping sheer and white gown. To complement the dress, Beyonce kept her shorter do looking effortlessly chic with relaxed waves.

  1. My girls are constantly asking me to do their hair “pretty” and I rarely come up with more than the usual plain pony-tail or braid. I never thought to look at magazines for ideas for their hair and these 3 are so simple yet will still look elegant and age appropriate on little ones!

    • I agree! I often look to red carpet look to get ideas for myself and my niece who Always has a party to go to. So these are simple yet great ways to change it up a bit.

  11. Such cute hairstyles but I am TERRIBLE at fixing hair. My mom always laughs at how crooked my daughter’s ponytails are and I’m like “That took me 20 minutes to do!” I just do not have the gift. It doesn’t help that my daughter was cursed with the same head of hair as me: super crazy thick. Our hair breaks ponytail holders and sends bobby pins flying, trying to leave it straight down and she looks like she lived in the woods for 3 years. We’re all happier when my mom fixes her hair 😉

  13. My normal hairstyle consists of discount shampoo and a messy ponytail/bun thingy. I love finding blogs like yours because they inspire me to stop being such a lazy girl. My poor daughters (aged 8 and 18 months) are doomed!

  19. I have an almost 3 year old girl who wil not allow anybody to brush her hair for more than a minute so I doubt if I can try these on her BUT I love styling up my hair once in a while! 😉

  25. These are all fabulous hairstyles. My daughter’s hair is EXTREMELY long and I can pull these off (except for Queen Bey’s) with her hair.
